Science and Morality

DEFINITIONS
  • Science: the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.
  • Morality: principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.

HOW ARE THEY CONNECTED

As defined, science is an intellectual study of the physical and natural world through observation, science has been applied to all innovative technologies and inventions over the past century. Through science, we are slowly advancing higher up on the pedestal of knowledge and the meaning of life. Quoting Robert Staughton Lynd “Knowledge is power if man knows what fact not to bother with” suggesting that knowledge must continue on to be gain, however to an extent. This is where morality comes into play, morality is the extent in which science may not be applied to further temper.

WHERE IS THIS “LINE”

“The need of many out weighs the needs of few” is where the line is drawn.
If organic fruits are what the many needs, regardless of the few who worries about the increase in their spendings, the needs of the many becomes first priority.
If testing sudo-science is what the many believe they need, regardless of the few who believe it is fictional, the many will get the sudo-science treatment or any forms needed.
However, if the few needed immortality and the many favors a morality, science will work in favors of the many.
Hence, the line of morality that essentially stops any observations and investigation to temper with the unknown is drawn when less preferred it.

WHO DRAWS THE LINE

WE draw the line, not as an individual but as a group. As science and morality work in favor of the many, we - and not I- get to decide where the line is drawn.

WHAT IS THE MANY EQUALS THE FEW
Referring to physics, I will be categorizing this scenario as an example of random error. Again in physics, to eliminate random errors we must conduct multiple trials. Hence, if many ever equal the few or vise-versa, there will be a recount.

However, even if after the recount the many still equals the few, then whatever the debated topic may proceed to further investigation. The reason for this is due to the fact that equality of both parties shows a belief of potential for the need. Hence, it is best to gain the knowledge.
